Walgreens is now carrying Narcan in its more than 8,000 pharmacies across the nation. The nasal spray has the power to bring someone back from an opioid overdose, something that is now killing more than 140 people every day.
Walgreens Vice President Rick Gates said, “By stocking Narcan in all our pharmacies, we are making it easier for families and caregivers to help their loved ones by having it on hand in case it is needed.” CVS is also stocking Narcan in 43 states.
President Donald Trump has recently declared a national emergency on the opioid epidemic that has plagued the country for more than a year. By declaring the national emergency, the hope is that greater emphasis will be put on the fight against fatal overdoses and addiction.
Walgreens does not require an individual prescription in 45 states to obtain the nasal spray. The spray costs about $125. Naloxone, the active medication in Narcan, has been proven to save people in the throws of opioid overdoses, whether they have ingested straight opioids or those laced with fentanyl or its analogs. It has been called an opioid antagonist by experts.
