Battling an addiction to drugs or alcohol is a difficult, lifelong process. Many people are afraid that they will relapse and, in fact, some do. There are ways that you can avoid a relapse before it occurs and maintain your sobriety.
1. Change Your Social Circle
One of the most common reasons for relapse is a return to the same social circle after becoming sober. Once you have fought your addiction and are on the road of recovery, change the friends you have in your life if they could drag you back down.
2. Change Your Hangouts
In some places you used to visit, drug use was common. Once you have gained control of your addiction, don’t visit those places again. If you are serious about staying sober, you will want to hang out in locations where others feel the same.
3. Reside in Sober Living
Transitioning back to life following rehabilitation is difficult. Many people in recovery choose to live in a sober living home before living out on their own again. Halfway houses are a great way to slowly make your way back into the real world.
4. Rehab is Still There
Rehab doesn’t disappear once you have become sober. If you feel as though you are being tempted by drugs or alcohol, return to rehab or another safe place before you relapse.
5. Come Up with a Plan
People are often more successful maintaining sobriety when they have a plan to do so. Know what you will do when you experience cravings. Reach out to a sobriety sponsor. Talk to a supportive family member. Knowing how you will deal with these feelings before they occur can be extremely helpful.
